Emeritus Professor at the University of Tokyo and adviser of the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) of Japan. He was previously president of this institution, Vice President of the Scientific Board of Japan, Director of the Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology of the University of Tokyo and Director General of the National Institute for Advanced Interdisciplinary Research (MITI).
